Topic #4: Ethics and Values

Recently, a video game called Rapelay has been criticized for how it depicts women as victims. Grand Theft Auto has also been criticized for contributing to violence among teens by organizations such as MAVAV. In light of our discussion on ethics and values, what do you think? In your response, remember these questions from our class:

- What principals do (and should) govern our lives?
- What governs ethical behavior?
- What is good/bad work or play?
- What principals do (and should) govern our lives?
- What governs ethical behavior?
- What is good/bad work or play?

Read the links in this post and respond by 5pm CST July 26. You can search the Internet for other articles and cite them in your response. Your response should be 300-500 words.

Everyone’s principals are different. Who am I to say “these are the principals you should live by”? Most people’s principals are made up of how things make them feel, their own reactions, which has to do a great deal of how they grew up; and of course everyone’s life differs. Our ethical standards pretty much come from the same place, except it is a more broadened horizon. Everyone knows that stealing cars is wrong, and everyone knows that shooting people is wrong, just like everyone knows that raping women is wrong. Those are ethical. Now, whether a person does these things or not is based on their principals or morals. It will vary from person to person. Maybe a person who steals cars would never rape women. Maybe there’s a person who would do both. Maybe there is even a person who does all three; but, chooses to do them on the internet in a virtual world and/or in a videogame. Personally, I would rather hang out with the last person than the other two who would do it in real life. I think it is better for a person to commit these crimes, in a video game and fantasize it out of their system than to actually do it in a real life scenerio. MAVAV is just that, MOTHERS against videogame violence and addiction. They are just babying their children. As much as they would love to be able to “protect” their child’s innocence against violence and what not, they cannot. It’s all around the world in our every day lives and eventually, one way or another, they will come across violence and/or pornography. They can limit what their child plays and is exposed to by following the rating of the game, filtering their internet searches and even blocking some content; but, they cannot stop a world wide industry from creating this media for the “sake of the children.” Did these videogame makers go too far? Who’s to say? Maybe the person playing the game? Stop playing it, then. Or maybe it’s a person who watched someone else play? Don’t be around them when they’re playing. A mother? She can throw the game away, burn it, shred it, delete it, whatever she can; but the game will still exist. Should these type of games have been created in the first place? It probably was not the best idea to create these types of games; but, as I said, it is better for a person to fantasize it out of their system through game play then to actually do it. Eventually games, such as RapeLay, will “die-out”; but, a new game similar to it will arise. Let it. The only thing a person can do is to ignore it, influence others around them to do the same, and move on; it, too, will eventually die-out. Most likely the people playing these games are regular everyday normal people who are just bored. If they are mature enough to be playing this game, all the game will do is satisfy their boredom and nothing more.

In fact, in your life there are a lot of things have positive and negative attitudes which can be the main reference the leads any one to build your own principles and personality. Nowadays, these affect sources on culture and ethics become wider among the people in any side of the world. The technology helps publishing what some strange persons want to build the new generations by their ways. For instance, the video games which most of people play as a favorite can cause culture change. These video games commonly have negative purposes and methods to have knowledge about doing different kinds of violence against the law. By playing more of those criminal video games the opportunity of their existence in the real time increases. To force changing in principles and ethics or any type of cultural thing we need to limit and control the publishing sources for the games that consider being more affective to us. There should be strong stand from all the government toward these source and don’t over free allowed ways to get those games. So, we can govern the ethical behavior from sliding to the negative path. Indeed, there are some limited advantages of play video games such as it makes you a good thinker and notice that facing problems not crimes is what can make your personality stronger. But when some things not just video games has more disatvanges, it consider be a danger to the people, culture or even the environment.
